Dr. Hopkins is an Associate Professor and Extension Urban Entomologist with the University of Arkansas, Division of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension Service, and has been located at the Little Rock State Office since 2002. He initially joined the Cooperative Extension Service as the Insecticide Testing Coordinator in 2000.

Prior to this, Dr. Hopkins spent 16 years in the chemical industry (All in the SE US) with Union Carbide and Rhone-Poulenc. John earned his Ph.D. (Major/Entomology Minor/Plant Pathology) from the University of Arkansas in 1983, his M.S. (Entomology) from Clemson University in 1980, and his B.S. (Microbiology) from Clemson University in 1976.

As an Urban Entomologist, Dr. Hopkins’ extension program focuses on pest management education and training for extension clientele in the areas of structural and household pests, turf and ornamental pests, and fire ant management in the urban environment.

Extension Urban Entomology Program:

  3. Coordinates Extension’s statewide participation in the Annual Gypsy Moth Trapping Program in cooperation with the ASPB
  4. Cooperates with Extension Forestry with respect to Emerald Ash Borer Training and Management Recommendations for County Personnel
  5. Coordinates and Conducts 4-H Entomology Program

  7. Manages the “Ask the Pest Crew” online Q&A program. A multi-disciplinary (entomology, horticulture, plant pathology, weed science, & wildlife management) effort among UofA Extension Specialists to deliver IPM recommendations to the general public and other interested clientele.
    1. eXtension Urban IPM Community of Practice, regional web-based outreach program for urban and school IPM.
    2.  eXtension Fire Ant Community of Practice, regional web-based outreach program for imported fire ant infested states.
  8. Manages publication of the ‘Pest Management News” newsletter, providing timely urban pest management information to County Extension Personnel and other interested parties. A multi-disciplinary (entomology, forestry, horticulture, plant pathology, weed science, & wildlife management) effort among UofA Extension Specialists
  9. Ongoing Applied Research Projects:
    1. Evaluation of Various Insecticides and Insecticide Combinations as Fire Ant Quarantine Treatments on Commercial Grass Sod
    2. Field Efficacy of Trelona (Novaluron) Double Bait (DB) when Presented to Foraging Subterranean Termites in the Advance Termite Bait System Installed Around Existing Structures
    3. Management Strategies for Crapemyrtle Bark Scale in Landscapes and Commercial Nurseries

 

Areas of interest include extension education and applied research in urban IPM and imported fire ant management. Current applied research includes management strategies for crape myrtle bark scale in AR and IPM methods to manage imported fire ants with reduced risk fire ant baits. Extension activities include the development of web-based in-service-training courses and on-site training in general entomology, IPM for household and structural pests, IPM for turf and ornamental pests, imported fire ant management; and extension outreach through newsletters, popular press articles, interviews, presentations, field visits, insect identification, etc. Clientele served includes commercial pest management professionals, commercial lawn and landscape professionals, county extension personnel, Master Gardeners, the general public, youth and others.
