GENERAL AREAS OF INTEREST:

Veterinary Entomology

SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESEARCH:

    LIVESTOCK – Beef Cattle:
  • Quantification of horn fly blood meals collected from selected breeds of beef cattle. Research led by C. D. Steelman in cooperation with Dr. A. L. Szalanski, Department of Entomology and Dr. A. H. Brown Jr., Department of Animal Science and Roberts Angus Ranch, Green Forest, AR.
  • Efficacy of using horn fly-resistant bulls to develop a horn fly resistant herd of cows. Cooperative Project with USDA,ARS,Knipling-Busland U.S. Livestock Insects Research Laboratory, Kerrville, TX. And the Russell Ranch, Kerrville, TX.
  • Determine levels of anti-coagulant pro-thrombin in the blood of selected breeds of beef cattle relative to innate horn fly resistance.

LIVESTOCK – Dairy Cattle:

USDA, SARE GRANT –

  • Determine seasonal occurrence of natural populations of pupal parasites (Muscidifurax, Spalangia etc.) on dairy farms.
  • Determine efficacy of sustained release of pupal parasites to manage house fly and black garbage flies on dairy farms.
  • Determine seasonal occurrence of pathogens, E. coli,0157:H7 and Campylobacter in adult filth flies collected on dairy farms.

WILDLIFE:

  • Determine seasonal occurrence of Borrelia, Ehrlichia, and Francisella and other pathogens in deer and small mammal populations in Arkansas.
  • Determine seasonal occurrence of Borrelia, Ehrlichia, and Francisella in Ixodes, Ambylomma and Dermacentor species of ticks.

Bedbug Poultry
:

Southern Regional Project Cooperative Efforts

  • Determine susceptibility of bed bugs from various states to selected insecticides.
  • Adult LMVDetermine susceptibility of the house fly and a black garbage fly, Hydrotaea aenescens, collected from broiler-breeder and turkey facilities.
  • Larval LMLWDetermine pathogens in the house fly and other filth flies collected from poultry and livestock farms in various states.
