  • I enjoy being an integral part of interdisciplinary team(s) developing and assisting growers to transition to well-balanced and holistic Integrated Fruit Crop Pest Management and Organic programs in open fields and high tunnels that are economical, environmentally sound and sustainable. Part of this enjoyment comes from working with growers, extension personnel, the marketing and processing industry and researchers at the local, regional, and national levels.
  • New Southern SARE R&E project (PI: Elena Garcia) on high tunnel grape production systems: a novel approach to growing grapes. My group will compare densities of insect and mite pests, damage and management inputs inside insect exclusion screened high tunnel to uncovered vineyard.
  • New project funded by Southern Region Small Fruit Consortium (PI: Donn Johnson) and by Driscoll's, Inc., on broad mite, a new pest of blackberry. We will develop a monitoring and management program for broad mites: describe broad mite seasonal biology; develop a sequential sampling programs and economic threshold relating broad mite density to first leaf damage; and evaluate efficacy against broad mites of organic and synthetic miticides and release of one of four predatory mite species (MS student: Jessica LeFors, advised by Donn Johnson).
  • New USDA OREI national project (PIs: Ash Sial, UGA and Mary Rogers, UMN) on spotted wing drosophila, a new invasive pest of ripening and ripened berry fruits. In Arkansas, we will describe seasonal biology via baited traps, assess fruit damage in commercial berry crops and adjacent wild fruit hosts in open fields and inside insect exclusion screened high and low tunnels (MS student: Elizabeth Herrera, advised by Donn Johnson; Rosalee Knipp - advised by Don Steinkraus).
  • Developing, validating and implementing fruit insect sampling methods and degree-day decision-making protocols.
  • Development and implementation of alternative pest control measures: mating disruption, Bt against lepidoptera pests, granulosis virus against codling moth, mass tapping against grape root borers and green June beetles, baited perimeter trap trees against plum curculio, nematodes against sesiids, releasing predatory mites, Surround particle film against Japanese beetle and plum curculio, and spot sprays versus whole planting spray programs.

Donn or his students have given fruit and pecan pest management presentations at the annual Oklahoma/Arkansas Horticulture Industry Show and been invited to speak at growers meetings and fruit workshops held in: Alabama, Illinois, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.
