Department of Entomology - Awards and Fellowships

Graduate Fellowships:

  • Doctoral Academy Fellowship
  • Distinguished Doctoral Fellowship
  • Charles G. Lincoln Fellowship

Competitive research fellowships are available to new graduate students (M.S. or Ph.D.) enrolling in the Department of Entomology in the Fall 2005 semester. Available fellowships include a M.S. Lincoln Fellowship of up to $18,000 annually, two Doctoral Academy Fellowships in Entomology of up to $20,000 annually, and a Distinguished Doctoral Fellowship in Entomology at $30,000 annually. All fellowships include full tuition waivers. Program(s) may be in any area of entomology; awards based on academic credentials. Please note that these Fellowships are specifically designated for United States citizens. Doctoral Academy Fellowships in Entomology
 

All applicants will be required to submit:

  1. All university and college transcripts, plus GRE scores (verbal, quantitative, and analytical scores).
  2. A resume or curriculum vitae describing the student’s academic background, work experience, previous awards, publications, grants or fellowships.
  3. A cover letter detailing the student’s research interests.
  4. Letters of recommendation from at least three persons (including applicant's major professor or honor’s thesis director if applicable) that describe potential in academics, research, and/or teaching.

    We will select applicants with:
  1. Transcripts that reflect that the applicant has the ability to succeed in a challenging academic environment.
  2. Master’s GPA is at least 3.6 or if an applicant has not completed a Master’s Degree he or she must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.75 or higher.
  3. GRE scores (verbal plus quantitative) are at least 1100 and GRE writing score is at least 5.0.
  4. Resume, cover letter, and reference letters indicate that the applicant has a strong commitment to research and/or teaching.

Distinguished Doctoral Fellowships in Entomology
All applicants will be required to submit: Same as for Doctoral Academy Fellowships.
We will select applicants with:
  1. Master’s GPA is at least 3.85 or if a prospective student has not completed a Master’s Degree he or she must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.65 or higher.
  2. GRE scores (verbal plus quantitative) are at least 1200 and GRE writing score is at least 5.5.
  3. Proven research skills, as evidenced by participation in honors programs, completion of an undergraduate research thesis or Master’s Degree, and/or relevant work experience.
  4. Resumes that identify nominees who have undertaken a broad and rigorous program of study and have a strong commitment to research and/or teaching.
  5. Excellent cover and reference letters that indicate high motivation and enthusiasm and outstanding academic, research, and/or teaching potential.

Lincoln Fellowship Criteria
  1. There will be at least two (2) fellowships maintained each year providing acceptable awardees are available;
  2. The recipients must (a) be a graduate student accepted for admission to the Graduate School and (b) be prepared to or actively working on a M.S. or Ph.D. degree in the Department of Entomology, and (c) demonstrate outstanding academic, research, and teaching potential;
  3. M.S. recipients must have completed requirements for a B. S. degree with at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA, and Ph.D. recipients must have completed requirements for a M.S. degree with at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA;
  4. Selection shall be by a committee appointed by the Dean of the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences;
  5. Former or current M.S. fellowship recipients are eligible to be considered for a Ph.D. fellowship;
  6. Funds shall not be awarded to any student not meeting the criteria established above;
  7. The Fellowship will be withdrawn if the recipient does not meet these academic and research performance standards:
(a) Recipient must register for 9 credits/semester;
(b) Recipient's academic performance must be satisfactory (at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA for M.S. degree candidates and a cumulative 3.5 GPA for Ph.D. degree candidates); and
(c) Recipient's research performance is judged exemplary by consensus of the advisory committee.

Fellowship payments (half) will be made at the start of both the fall and spring semesters.
