Building A228 - Entomology Shop & Forestry Lab (ESFL)

The University of Arkansas Forest Insect Laboratory has all the facilities and equipment needed for rearing and culturing southern pine beetle and its parasitoids, and for laboratory dissection and manipulation of bark beetles and parasitoids. The Forest Insect Laboratory contains six Wild-Heerbrugg dissecting microscopes, including a dual-headed observation scope; two insectary rooms and custom designed emergence cages for rearing beetles and parasites in logs and for maintenance of bark beetle and parasitoid cultures; plus a 500 cubic foot walk-in cold storage facility for holding beetles in a state of arrested development. Greenhouse space is available for culture.

Forestry Lab

In addition to the equipment required for insect cultures, the forest insect laboratory possesses all equipment needed for sampling bark beetle and most other forest insect populations including tree climbing gear, battery powered drills and hole-cutting saws, chain saws, and climbing ladders. Equipment for processing bark samples in the laboratory includes a Faxitron Model 43805 Industrial X-Ray System and a complete darkroom, plus a thoroughly tested and efficient computerized data storage and management system. Equipment and expertise necessary for data storage, summarization, statistical analysis, and modeling are all available. Our laboratory has excellent microcomputer facilities (including Macintosh and PC Computers) and ethernet access to the University of Arkansas network facilities. Vehicles in the Forest Insect project include an equipment trailer, two pickup trucks, a Chevy Suburbans and a 4 wheel drive ATV with trailer for off-road equipment transport.
